Beginners Navigation Course Peak District Gritstone Adventures
This course is for those who are completely new to navigation / map reading or for those with a little bit of experience. This course will introduce you to the basics of navigation using a map and compass and will give you a solid grounding to continue developing your navigational skills.
The course will start with around an hour’s theory in the cafe over a brew, before venturing out onto the hills to begin your practical training. The pace of the walk will be relaxed and focus on navigation training rather than trying to get in a huge walk. There will be the opportunity to get away from paths onto open moorland and practice fine navigation using a compass.
You will be coached by highly knowledgeable, local, qualified instructors who will put you at ease. All courses take place in the beautiful and dramatic moors of the Peak District National Park, and close to many places to stay, eat and drink.
Above all, this will be a relaxed, beautiful and enjoyable walk in the Peak District and you’ll come home upskilled.

Build your own Navigation Course Peak District Gritstone Adventures
This course is for those who already have some navigation experience and would like to hone their existing skills. This will most likely be to increase their fine / micro navigation skills. On this course we’d likely go to a more remote moorland area of the Peak District and concentrate on navigating to extremely small features or contour shapes.
We’d could also look at triangulation techniques to really pinpoint your location using map and compass.
You may also want to navigate at night which we can do in any season except summer and make use of the darker evenings.
It’s likely you would book this course for a specific reason such as an expedition or long distance running / walking challenge. We have extensive experience of both running and participating in this type of event so just tell us what you are doing and we’ll devise a course which helps you reach your goals.

FAQs
Why choose us?
We have 10 years of experience in training walkers and mountaineers of all abilities and have set hundreds of people on the path to becoming a competent navigator. Our instructors are all highly qualified local experts who are selected not only for their vast experience, but also for their calm, approachable manner and ability to relate well to people.
I’m an absolute beginner – is this for me?
Yes – we specialise in introducing people to navigation / map reading for the first time.
Is equipment included?
You will need to wear your own walking gear and have a rucksack
Can you tailor the course to our needs?
Yes, this is what we do. Our courses have structure but are very flexible and really, all our activities and training courses are flexible and adaptable. This is your day, not ours.
Where will we Walk?
We will most probably walk in the Dark Peak area of the Peak District – expect to meet us in either Castleton or Hathersage
I’m not very fit – can I still do this course?
Of course you can. We are very used to dealing with people of all ability and fitness. We can tailor your booking to suit you. This is a navigation course so the pace will be slowed for training, this isn’t about bagging summits.
Can I do a half day instead of a full day?
You can do a half day navigation course but it’s unlikely you’ll really get the training you need unless you do a whole day.
Do you provide transport?
I’m afraid we cannot provide transport, you will need your own. Speak to us about public transport options.
